Officials at Georgetown University came to the defense of Sandra Fluke on Friday, criticizing radio host Rush Limbaugh for calling the third-year law student a "slut" and a "prostitute" after she spoke out on birth control insurance coverage.

John DeGioia, president of Georgetown, sent a letter to students and faculty praising Fluke's congressional testimony. "She was respectful, sincere, and spoke with conviction," he wrote. "She provided a model of civil discourse. This expression of conscience was in the tradition of the deepest values we share as a people."

"Slut" was how Rush Limbaugh described birth control activist Sandra Fluke. Then, as frequently happens with charged statements by the conservative talk show host, the furor erupted.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has created an anti-Limbaugh petition, and President Obama even called the third-year Georgetown University law student to express his support.

On his nationally syndicated show, Limbaugh made a "kissing noise with his lips," ABC News reported, and said of Obama, "What a great guy. ... What is she 30 years old?"

White House spokesman Jay Carney said that Obama "wanted to express his disappointment" that Fluke had been "the subject of inappropriate personal attacks," The Times earlier reported.

It's a major flap, but Fluke, anyway, seemed unflappable in a Friday morning appearance on the "Today" show.

She said at first she was stunned by Limbaugh's comments, then "very upset," noting that they occurred "on the first day of Women's History Month."  Fluke didn't have any choice names for Limbaugh.

Limbaugh's comments were related to a GOP-led attempt to roll back new federal insurance rules requiring contraceptive coverage. The ammendment by Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) was rejected Thursday by the Senate.

Fluke had recently testified about contraception before a Democratic panel, which placed her in the conservative talk show host's crosshairs.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi called on Limbaugh to apologize for his comments.  That apparently just spurred him on. Thursday on his nationally syndicated show he said: "So Miss Fluke, if we are going to ... pay for you to have sex, we want something for it. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch."

you should find video of him saying all of this stuff... it's ssooooooooooooooo much worse when you actually see him. The part about wanting to watch the videos was fucking perv-raper-creepy... it literally made my skin crawl.. in that moment, whether he says he was joking or not, in that moment I saw the man he is.. he is the man who would rape a women if he wouldn't get punished. If he came across a woman passed out, he'd fuck her and walk away and say she deserved it.. woman have spent their lives 'feeling out' the 'mr creepies' of the world... it's like a 6th sense, it's just something all women have. (doesn't mean the use it tho..) and all it takes are certain words,phrases,looks.. whatever and we 'get that feeling'.. Rush exudes it in these videos..

and oddly, not a word from the GOP establishment... but lord god if a congressman sex'ts a girlfriend, we better repudiate and excoriate him instantly... instead they all just mysteriously have something else to do and don't have the time to know what's going on.. of course they will pop up again when it's blown over or if Obama farts on camera..

I have a problem with bigots hiding behind the First Amendment (http://thelasttradition.blogspot.com/2012/03/liberals-smell-blood-in-water-and-want.html). It's not about that, it's about pigs acting like pigs.

After 20 years or so that Rush Limbaugh has been on air, Liberals smell blood in the water. A seek and destroy full-scale boycott effort is underway on Twitter (spearheaded by @StopRush, an online activist who led a boycott of Glenn Beck's Fox News show in 2009) and with the Daily Kos circulating a petition urging advertisers to join the protest.

However, I must point out Liberals have been falsely accusing Rush Limbaugh of being a racist, misogynist, chauvinist, homophobic, Islamphobic, boorish, divisive, and a hater for standing up for traditional values. At this point the battle is much bigger than Limbaugh calling Sandra Fluke a “slut” which under our 1st amendment as a citizen he has the right to do so. The question now becomes does the 1st amendment provision of Free Speech means what it says or does the Liberal concept of “political correctness” which has always been an attack on the 1st amendment win the day?

We have moved from a society that valued education and intelligence to a society that has a  candidate for President that believes colleges are bad and that encouraging people to go to college or vocational training makes you a snob. In 1960 individual states in this wonderful country of ours could outlaw the sale of contraceptives. In 2012 we have Presidential candidates who would go back to that time. In the 1960’s we had sheriffs and governors who demonized civil rights activists, beat them up and threw them in jail. In 2012 we having state legislatures introducing bills that  will make it a felony to protest. In 1968 I cried in sorrow when they first killed Martin Luther King, Jr. and then Bobby Kennedy. I was ten years old. Forty years later, I like to think that MLK,Jr and RFK, along with my mother, were there with me when I voted for Barak Obama for President.

No one with daughters the age of Sandra Fluke, and I have two, could possibly abide the insult and abuse heaped upon this courageous and well-intentioned young lady. Mr. Limbaugh, with his highly personal attacks on Miss Fluke, overstepped any reasonable bounds of decency. Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse.

Not only did they defend Limbaugh, they lashed out at anyone who suggested the titan talker lacked common sense. And then they stomped on Sandra Fluke's reputation some more.

-Fox News contributor Michelle Malkin denounced Fluke as a "femme-agogue tool."

-The right-wing site Jawa Report illustrated a post about Fluke with a picture of a tattoo that reads "Semen Demon."

-Pam Geller wrote that Fluke is "banging it five times a day" and that "calling this whore a slut was a softball."

-Accuracy in Media's Don Irvine called her a "skank."

-Former CPAC Blogger of The Year, Ace of Spades, called Fluke a "shiftless rent-a-cooch from East Whoreville."

-Michelle Malkin guest blogger Doug Ross used "Got Slut?" in a headline and suggested Fluke suffered from "nymphomania."

-Dana Loesch complained the controversy surrounding Limbaugh's three-day "slut" campaign represented a "manufactured" story. (This, before Limbaugh responded to the "manufactured" story by issuing a rare public statement.)

The steady stream of advertisers fleeing Rush Limbaugh's radio show continued on Monday and Tuesday, as at least eight more sponsors announced they would no longer run commercials on the program in the wake of Limbaugh's offensive comments about Sandra Fluke.

Even though Limbaugh has apologized for calling Fluke a "slut" and a "prostitute" for her advocacy of insurance coverage of birth control, advertisers are still moving towards the exits. On Monday night, makeup company Bare Escentuals told its Twitter followers that it was pulling its ads:

On Tuesday, Think Progress listed five additional companies who have vacated the show: AccuQuote, ServiceMagic, Polycom, Hadeed Carpet and Thompson Creek Windows.

The eight businesses join at least nine others (including AOL, parent company of The Huffington Post) in ending their association with Limbaugh's show. Two radio stations have also dropped the program in the wake of Limbaugh's comments about Fluke.

On Monday, Limbaugh addressed the advertisers leaving his show.

"They decided they don't want you or your business anymore," he said. "This program is always about you... I knew the political inclinations of these people. They didn't care that they were profiting, and I didn't either. No radio broadcast will succeed by putting business ahead of the needs of its loyal audience."

Leave it to Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to one-up Rush Limbaugh in the name-calling department.

"Speaking of prostitutes, big oil's top call girl Sen Inhofe wants to kill fuel economy backed by automakers, small biz, enviros, & consumers," the New York-based environmentalist wrote Tuesday on Twitter.

Kennedy was targeting Inhofe for a letter the Oklahoma Republican sent last week to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson that questions the Obama administration's fuel economy and air pollution policies.

Inhofe spokesman Matt Dempsey said Kennedy's tweet crosses the line, especially in the wake of Limbaugh’s apology to a Georgetown University student after calling her a ‘prostitute’ during an on-air broadcast.

"It's hard to believe that Robert Kennedy Jr. would choose to use such language — especially this week," Dempsey said. "I bet he now regrets it."

Kennedy told POLITICO that he stands by his tweet.

"Well, I think it's an opportunity for Americans to compare the relative moral positions of the two acts in question and which is more harmful to our country,” he said. “In Sen. Inhofe's case, here's a U.S. senator whose job is to serve the American public who has made a clear and unambiguous choice to serve the moneyed interests of oil companies.”

“The context with which Mr. Limbaugh used it was wrong and immoral,” Kennedy Jr. added. “But it’s not immoral in using it to apply to a politician who is selling his office.”
