Title: so what would you do Post by: ekg on August 16, 2012, 05:07:06 pm in 2014.. may-ish.. the youngest kid and I will be going to Europe for about 30-35 days.. we'll be doing Scotland,Ireland,England for about 18-20 days.. then over to...
annnnnnnnnndd here are the options.. the choices I'm struggling with (HA!) fly from London to Rome stay for 5-6days (1 day will be spent in Florence and maybe another in amalfi I mean holy crap, google "amalfi town" it's jaw dropping).. overnight train to Paris x 4-5 days then ending with 5 day Switzerland train tour.. (Let me say that while geographically this is all over the place, it's actually cheaper.. since flying from london to rome is like $70 but a train from Zurich to Rome is like $700..) Now, in that scenario.. from Italy on, I already did back in 06..like 20 days in Italy, then Paris then Switzerland.. and I don't mind doing it again.. the overnight train from Rome to Paris and the 5 day Swiss train was really some of the best parts of the trip.. but.. do I want to re-do? or? instead do.. Scotland,Ireland,England.. then to Paris for 4-5 days, down to Florence for 2 days, then Rome for 5 days(with a day in almafi).. and ending with a 4-6 Greek/Turkey island tour.. ideally we'd do Athens,Crete,Sparta,Thermopylae, Istanbul,Ephesus( and troy).. and back to Rome then home.. price wise? not much difference.time-wise, I can make them almost the same... history wise? well shit, gotta go with Greece.. but I'm not a 'beachy' kind of girl.. I'm more the 'mountain' type... but to just call the eastern Mediterranean 'beachy' is as blasphemous as calling the alps 'mountain-like'.. HA! so in your heart of hearts.. if you had the chance.. or if you've already done one or the other... which option do you chose.. FYI.. Scotland,Ireland,England,Paris and Rome are nonexchangeable.. those are 'must-go'.. it's really the order they're seen or whether it's Switzerland train or Greece/turkey cruise.. to end with.. Title: Re: so what would you do Post by: ekg on August 16, 2012, 05:11:55 pm huh.. while hitting 'post' I just thought.. 'hey, maybe I can do it all.." that would put me at about 40 days and another $1000.. but I'd be able to fly out of Zurich, which I'd really enjoy..
fuck.. Title: Re: so what would you do Post by: reverend_darth on August 16, 2012, 05:21:58 pm Gotta ask, what's this shit cost?
Title: Re: so what would you do Post by: Howey on August 16, 2012, 06:29:01 pm No Deutschland?
Is this one of those cruise deals? AMEX tour? I've been to all those places, loved Rome. Stay at the Columbus Hotel (if it still exists). It's right up the square from the Vatican. Title: Re: so what would you do Post by: ekg on August 16, 2012, 10:06:10 pm Gotta ask, what's this shit cost? I'm figuring... $15,000 to go comfortably.. 12,000 to go cheap.. I've got 2 years to save and 2 ppl saving (the kid is getting a job to pay her part).. so my out pocket might be...? 7000-9000/24 months=saving $400 a month and if I commit, I'll be using cigarette money since I'll be quitting them.. so it pretty much works out even.. then again, I'm pricing it now.. could be way more. or ? one of my client owned 4 travel agency's so I'm going to see him tomorrow and get a better estimate.. IOW.. fuck if I know right now.. but I think I'm in the ballpark Title: Re: so what would you do Post by: ekg on August 16, 2012, 10:13:27 pm No Deutschland? Is this one of those cruise deals? It's right up the square from the Vatican. no I'm more interested in other places over Germany.. no, not a cruise deal.. I'll be planning it step by step on my own after Ireland.. we're taking an ef tours tours of scotland/ireland for the 1st part.. that'll save on the plane costs and after that, I'm exquisitely anal about 'trip planning' and will spend an insane amount of time planning the rest.. since I did it before, I know more about what I want to stay and what I want to do so it'll be somewhat easier.. I want to stay in the ponte sisto/piazza navona area of Rome, it's perfectly situated for walking.. literally 15 mins from Vatican in one direct and 15 mins to the Colosseum in the other.. ;) |
