Government Shutdown Opposed by Americans in Poll Faulting Republican Cuts

Americans are sending a message to congressional Republicans: Don’t shut down the federal government or slash spending on popular programs.

Almost 8 in 10 people say Republicans and Democrats should reach a compromise on a plan to reduce the federal budget deficit to keep the government running, a Bloomberg National Poll shows. At the same time, lopsided margins oppose cuts to Medicare, education, environmental protection, medical research and community-renewal programs.

While Americans say it’s important to improve the government’s fiscal situation, among the few deficit-reducing moves they back are cutting foreign aid, pulling U.S. troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq, and repealing the Bush-era tax cuts for households earning more than $250,000 a year.

The results of the March 4-7 poll underscore the hazards confronting Republicans, as well as President Barack Obama and Democrats, as they face a showdown over funding the government and seek a broader deficit-reduction plan.

“Americans do not have a realistic picture of the budget,” says J. Ann Selzer, the Des Moines, Iowa-based pollster who conducted the survey. “We all know people who are in debt yet cannot for the life of them figure out where the money goes.”

oh the hell we don't.. and we know where the money is going. We just don't want to hear how schools, teachers, the poor, and middle class workers and such are the ones who need to 'tigheten their belt'.. in fact, we're pretty goddamn sick of hearing it.. there a about 16 states getting ready to pull this

The new governor has been criticized for proposing deep cuts to public education, universities and local governments while slashing business taxes, asking people to pay more income taxes and requiring public workers to make concessions. He wants to eliminate the Earned Income Tax Credit that helps the working poor keep more of their earnings -- a move church groups and advocates for the poor oppose.

The Michigan League for Human Services this week cited a new analysis by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy that found households earning $17,000 or less would pay 1.1 percent more of their income in new taxes, while those making $355,000 or more would pay 1/10th of 1 percent more under Snyder's proposals. A recent league analysis also found that Snyder's plan will cut business taxes by 86 percent while increasing individual income taxes 31 percent.

shit that Michigan is pulling.. this goof wants to cut tax write-off for seniors, the poor and those who donate to public universities.. to make $1.7B in revenue.. sounds good? Nope, because he's giving $1.7B to corporations in tax cuts.. so he still comes out in the hole..

this idea that we don't know what's going on is bullshit.. some of us who aren't buying into the 'lets make teachers and the poor pay all taxes and then the rich and corporations will love us and start spending money again"  see exactly what's going on and before too long, the masses are going to be working for vouchers to the nearest walmart as their paycheck and wondering wtf happened?
