After years of urging residents to buy fuel-efficient cars and giving them tax breaks to do it, Washington state lawmakers are considering a measure to charge them a $100 annual fee — what would be the nation's first electric car fee. State lawmakers grappling with a $5 billion deficit are facing declining gas tax revenue, which means less money to maintain or improve roads. "Electric vehicles put just as much wear and tear on our roads as gas vehicles," said Democratic state Sen. Mary Margaret Haugen, the bill's lead sponsor. "This simply ensures that they contribute their fair share to the upkeep of our roads." States tax anywhere from .30 to .60 cents a gallon, I am not sure what the Fed taxes on top of the states taxes. The states can not afford to lose that revenue source, so any talk other than adding more corn ethanol is all just bluster. Oil is here to stay. Second note, when bitching about gas prices realize how much it is taxed, your government is partly responsible for the high gas prices. Also look at the states with the highest, Mass and CA two places with tons of taxes and CA is damn near broke. Just goes to show raising taxes does not always equate to a better government.
