HA!
It's an interesting thing to watch and think about. It would be great to have a more democratic leader in the region, but I still don't know if the people are ready for such a leader. It seems they do better under the guys that aren't evil, but maybe a little on the 'dictator-Y' side of things..
one thing that would bring about the wrong kind of change is to go all Kent-state on all the protesters... that will incite more and definitely bring out the class of leaders we don't want to see take over..

no matter what, it's got to be a pretty tight line Obama in walking on right now..

Obama, and Hillary, are doing great - and the right thing. I'm sure that pisses the pubs and Bolton off. I've been glued to Twitter since this began, it's amazing the popular support among the Egyptians for Mubarek's removal.

Wait. No comment on poor little Ms. abused Chesler's sob story? Just how have the fundamentalist Islamics changed since the 1960's???

In the absence of my posts, do you just make up stuff you think I'm going to say?

I don't know how much of an influence the Muslim Brotherhood would have in a post Mubarak Egypt, but  since they are in parliament now, I imagine they will have some influence. No I didn't give Sam the link to that website.  He's hardly on the board much anymore anyway, so why worry about him?

Hey...don't jump on moi! You're the one who said:

If the Egyptian government collapses (and it could unless the government takes a very hard line against the unrest),
I figured you were lockstep in with the pubs and Bolton on this one...

As far as the Muslim Brotherhood: It's called representative democracy, ya know...Kinda like what we have? Just think of the Muslim Brotherhood (who are a. working hard to maintain civility in Egypt right now, and b. have publicly stated they DO NOT want to get involved other than that) as the Egyptian Tea Party. Gotta give the extreme kooks a voice, ya know...

In the absence of my posts, do you just make up stuff you think I'm going to say?

Unlike Egypt, there was virtually no chance any government replacing the current Iranian one would be worse for us than the one we have now.

See? There ya go again! Why are you so down on the Egyptian people? I don't see them chanting anti-American slogans in the streets. Do you think they're going to allow a crazy fundamentalist Islamist government? One who won't let them have their cell phones and internet?

He's hardly on the board much anymore anyway, so why worry about him?

I love it!

I'm sorry to say that I have been moving and I haven't seen any tv since Thursday really..  this does seem to be a mess though.. do we support the guy who has been there for 30 yrs and 'wink-wink' elected each time? or do we hope that real democracy takes over?

Egypt has a very conservative Muslim streak just under the surface and if that takes over, we're in for a whole new world..

Moving? Obama bought you a home?  Wink

Mubarek has been a dictator too long and the people have spoken. I've always said (hell, since Vietnam) when the people want change, change will happen. I don't think the Egyptian people will allow the Muslim Brotherhood to take over the government, although it's obvious lilMike's convinced that'll happen.

I sent him a msg on his blog to join this discussion. Maybe he will....

I think I had mentioned on some other thread or subject before about the gradual Islamization of the middle east, from the 1950's, when the educated elites were Western oriented and focused, to now, when the educated elites are becoming more islamic.  Anyway I re found that site that had those photos.

http://pajamasmedia.com/phyllischesler/2010/01/28/the-steady-erosion-of-womens-rights-in-egypt-a-photographic-story/

Cairo University, class of 1959:

Cairo University, class of 2004:

That's why if the protestors win, it could go either way.  A secular representative republic, or an Iran style Islamic state.

Who would of thought that the island of stability of in the middle east might be Iraq?

You do know that the woman who wrote that piece married an "educated elite" Afghan in 1961 and was taken to his country and imprisoned by him and his family?

So...when exactly did these "educated elites"  become "more islamic"?

Was that you that gave the pitiful link to Pajamas Media to Sam the other day? lol...hopefully he's gone from there for good now after being so roundly reamed by ekg and Darth.

So what are you hoping for in Egypt?
4626  Politikal / Political News and Election Coverage / Egypt on: January 29, 2011, 12:11:09 pm
I think the average lefty (and me), would tend to watch MSNBC, rather than CNBC.  As a business channel, CNBC is the red headed stepchild of the NBC Universal TV family.  Although I imagine CNBC did have some coverage of Egypt.  But what's going on in Egypt is a big deal.  Last year we had street unrest in Iran that was eventually put down.  Last week street unrest collapsed the Tunisan government.   So now the same thing is going on in Egypt, and Egypt is quite a bit more important than Tunisa. If the Egyptian government collapses (and it could unless the government takes a very hard line against the unrest), it's a game changer.  Egypt might end up with a secular representative government, or... a Muslim Brotherhood dominated government.
In 1989 Ceausescu didn't take a hard line and found himself on the business end of a firing squad.  The Iranian government didn't take any such chances and are still in power.  That's probably going through Mubarak's mind right now.

Please tell me you're not in favor of Mubarek taking a "hard line".

Corcoran calls himself “an anarcho-capitalist” and while his blog has been taken down, based on his Twitter page, he appears to hold views similar to those of many in the anti-government libertarian wing of the conservative movement, like many tea party activists. Anarcho-capitalism is a radical subset of libertarianism, and is often referred to as “libertarian-anarchy.” For example, echoing calls from many on the right, Corcoran tweeted, “it is unconstitutional for the Feds to even run a department of education.”

In a Twitter exchange with reporter Laura Leslie, Corcoran lays out a conventional anti-government philosophy, and explains in depth why he views assassination as legitimate:

“I assert that the US federal gov has grown unconstitutionally large, and the legislature exceeds the powers delegated to it by the people,” Corcoran wrote. “As per the Declaration of Indep, when a gov becomes destructive those ends, it may be abolished,” he continued, “and the most moral approach is that which spares the maximum number of lives. Thus, assasination is a legitimate tool.”

He goes on to further justify assassination as “morally legitimate,” citing “Catholic Just War doctrine” among other theories, and explains, “It’s illegal, yes, but it’s not un-American. America was founded on the idea of shooting gov officials. Lexington Concord!” In another tweet, he writes, “I disagree with murder. …but shooting politicians who pass illegitimate, unconstitutional laws is not murder.” And in case there’s any doubt about his sincery, he writes, “Nope, it’s not a joke. I’m 100% serious.”

He also appears to be a fan of Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), re-tweeting a positive message about him in May: “Lefties: Before you start fringe-baiting Rand Paul, note that he’s better on civil liberties than most Democratic senators. And Obama.” He seems to dislike liberals, writing, “You so-called liberals make me laugh – you’re all for free speech until someone disagrees, then it’s ‘report him!’” He also accuses the Daily Kos of “Stalinism.”

definite yup!

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2011/01/18/arlington-man-loses-gun-license-due-to-blog-about-tucson-shooting/

Quote
ARLINGTON (CBS) – A blog threatening members of Congress in the wake of the Tucson, Arizona shooting has prompted Arlington police to temporarily suspend the firearms license of an Arlington man.

It was the headline “1 down and 534 to go” that caught the attention. “One” refers to Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head in the rampage, while 534 refers to the other members of the U.S. House and Senate.

Police are investigating the “suitability” of 39-year-old Travis Corcoran to have a firearms license

“We certainly take this as a credible threat, and credible until we prove otherwise,” said Arlington police Captain Robert Bongiorno.

In his blog Corcoran writes, “It is absolutely, absolutely unacceptable to shoot indiscriminately. Target only politicians and their staff and leave regular citizens alone.”

Police visited Corcoran’s home and found a “large amount” of weapons and ammunition. Sources told WBZ-TV that 11 guns were removed

Using the tried and true lilMike theory of libertarian teabagger stupidity, we can only assume that this man is, indeed, lilMike.

http://lawprofessors.typepad.com/firstamendment/2011/01/florida-bill-would-bar-doctors-from-asking-patient-or-family-about-guns-in-home.html

Fla. State Rep. Jason Brodeur has introduced H.B. 155, which provides:

Quote
1)(a) A verbal or written inquiry by a public or private physician, nurse, or other medical staff person regarding the ownership of a firearm by a patient or the family of a patient or the presence of a firearm in a private home or other domicile of a patient or the family of a patient violates the privacy of the patient or the patient's family members, respectively.
(b) A public or private physician, nurse, or other medical staff person may not condition receipt of medical treatment or medical care on a person's willingness or refusal to disclose personal and private information unrelated to medical treatment  in violation of an individual's privacy as specified in this section.
(c) A public or private physician, nurse, or other medical staff person may not enter any intentionally, accidentally, or  inadvertently disclosed information concerning firearms into any record, whether written or electronic, or disclose such 43 information to any other source.

A violation would be a third degree felony and could be punished with a fine “of not more than $5 million if the court determines that the person knew or reasonably should have known that the conduct was unlawful.” As the Palm Beach Post reports, the NRA has identified the bill a priority item on its agenda for this Florida legislative session. The legislative proposal would clearly invite a strong challenge as an unconstitutional prior restraint if enacted.

a. A physician is charged with ensuring the health of the patient. A gun in a home can seriously affect the health of the patient. der...

b. Conversations between a physician and a patient are confidential. der too...

4632  Politikal / Political News and Election Coverage / The Census? Wrong Again! on: May 31, 2010, 04:11:09 pm
Ya know...it's a crying shame there's nobody with the ballz to tell you you're soooo wrong, Mikie!

http://www.factcheck.org/2010/05/more-census-nonsense/

We’re also being asked about claims reported by New York Post columnist John Crudele, who wrote that Census was engaging in "some statistical tricks" to inflate the number of workers that it reports to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Crudele based his claim on reports from three Census workers, two of whom were not named.

But Census denies that what Crudele described is actually happening. And we can report that even if it is happening, it would not have any effect on jobs figures reported by the BLS. Crudele misunderstands — or at least, did not report accurately — the way jobs figures are gathered.

The sources he quoted claimed that they had been hired, fired and re-hired a number of times. Each time, Crudele claimed, "Census was able to report the creation of a new job to the Labor Department." But that’s not true.

For one thing, Census officials flatly deny that any such hiring and re-hiring is going on. In May 25 letters to the heads of the Joint Economic Committee of Congress, Census Director Robert M. Groves called the Post article a "distortion." He stated:

Census Director Groves, May 25: [W]e do not hire, then fire, and then rehire anyone. Any employee who is fired is fired for cause.

Groves said temporary workers go on "inactive" status when work is complete, and might be reactivated if more work comes up. But, "[a]t no time do we count a reactivation from non-working status as a ‘rehire.’ "

More to the point, the jobs figures that the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports each month are not based on any count of "new jobs" or new hires. Rather, the BLS gets payroll figures on how many persons are actually being paid at the time of its monthly survey. What reporters and economists commonly refer to as job growth or job losses reflect the net change from month to month, not any tally of those hired or fired (or retired or deceased, for that matter). Anyone who had been hired, fired and re-hired would still be reported just once, no matter how many times they may have been on or off the payroll before the reporting period.

For a full explanation of how jobs figures (technically, "total nonfarm employment") are gathered, see the "Frequently Asked Questions" page that BLS has provided to explain its National Current Employment Survey.

Actually, I pretty much won this one!

Not at all...

Government healthcare run by Republicans = Bad management based upon bad ideas, like taking Medicaid funds and reducing license plate fees...or shit like cutting off the only HIV certified physician in a three county area thus telling 300+ patients to eff off.

Government healthcare run by Democrats = Gets the money where it belongs, not reduced license plate fees.
4635  Politikal / Political News and Election Coverage / Really? on: March 24, 2010, 07:55:55 pm
Our own version of the SNL bit.

I've waited a couple of days to comment on this because I wanted to see what evidence turned up on, but so far, nothing.

So in the matter of Rep. Cleaver being spit on, I call shennanigans.

In the matter of Rep. Lewis being called the "N" word, I again call shennanigans.

I've scoured YouTube and I've seen various news coverage of the walk between buildings in question, and I didn't hear anyone use that language.  The walk was so heavily filmed by so many sources that it strains incredulity that not a single flip or phone camera didn't catch it, let alone the network news cameras that filmed it.  Rep. Jackson actually filmed it with his flip camera, so where is his footage?  And no witnesses.  Maybe Jackson has it on his flip and is just waiting for the right time to release it, but until then, it sounds like a political trick.

In the matter of Rep. Frank being called a faggot, there seems to be enough witnesses to confirm it, so even though there is no footage of it, I buy the story.

Interestingly though, several people near the person who called him that called him out on it.  So that's positive.

Really?

You didn't hear it so it didn't happen???

Take it away, ekg!
