Donald Trump's campaign is asking potential running mates to submit their tax returns as part of the presumptive GOP presidential nominee's vetting process, according to NBC News.

The Trump campaign said the request to see the returns as part of the vetting process is "normal," MSNBC reported Wednesday afternoon.

Trump has been under fire from former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney and Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton to publicly release his own tax returns.

The billionaire businessman has repeatedly said that he'll release his returns after an audit of his finances is complete, which the campaign reiterated on Wednesday, according to NBC.

Trump this week did release a 104-page personal financial disclosure report detailing his assets and net worth, though Clinton has pushed him to go a step further and release his tax returns.

Clinton's campaign took a swipe at Trump in releasing her own disclosure report Tuesday night, noting the submission of the disclosure form "is a legal requirement for anyone running for president."
“The true test for Donald Trump is whether he will adhere to the precedent followed by every presidential candidate in the modern era and make his tax returns available, as Hillary Clinton has done," Clinton campaign spokeswoman Christina Reynolds said in a statement.

Democrats reiterated that sentiment in a statement drawing attention to the report that Trump is calling on his VP hopefuls to submit their tax returns.
"That any potential number two would have to make their full taxes available to even be considered is a testament to the fact Donald Trump doesn't hold himself to basic minimum standards," said Democratic National Committee spokesman Luis Miranda.
