Never?

Quote
Orange County Republican party official Marilyn Davenport has sort-of apologized for sending out a racist picture of President Obama depicting him as a chimp being held by his chimp parents: "I'm sorry if my email offended anyone. I simply found it amusing regarding the character of Obama and all the questions surrounding his origin of birth."

She added: "Again, for those select few who might be truly offended by viewing a copy of an email I sent to a select list of friends and acquaintances, unlike the liberal left when they do the same, I offer my sincere apologies to you--the email was not meant for you."

Davenport's message came after the OC Weekly obtained a copy of an e-mail on Friday with a picture of the President photoshopped onto a baby chimp that's being held by two adult chimps. "Now you know why no birth certificate," the picture says.

She's sorry it's drawn negative attention...any other time spent in sorryville is done with disdain.  Some of her first response was ""Oh, come on! Everybody who knows me knows that I am not a racist. It was a joke. I have friends who are black. Besides, I only sent it to a few people--mostly people I didn't think would be upset by it."  If ANYONE on her select list was black, I'd like to know that.

Ever heard of Amos and Andy...

The existence of Amos and Andy and others portraying blacks stereotypically, or blacks portrayed in stereotype, in a time of mainstream acceptance...doesn't change that is was wrong.

Oh! Oh!

Watch Happy Endings on ABC Wednesday night! Finally a show that doesn't portray a stereotype!

If only Mike and Molly and Outsourced were the same...

I agree that for an official to do that sort of thing is wrong.

Racism is "just a joke" pretty much all the time.  It is the mainstay of the almost every stand up in the country-- notably the Def Comedy Jam tour which is just, pretty much, bagging on white people and how uptight they are.  It happens.

The question of right really only gets into play when and if it becomes public consumption.  Now comics have no one to answer to except the people who pay to get into see them.  Polictians?  Dicier.

I don't think that the joke, in and of itself, is wrong.  It's not in great taste, per say.  Or even, for that matter, particuarlly inventive.  The problem with racial jokes is that they are almost never clever and pander to the lowest and dullest instincts of the people telling or hearing them.  They play to viciousness and fear and misunderstanding.  So, stupid people laughing at stupid stuff.

If that's how you want to play your politics (or comedy), so be it.  I mean, I don't want to, but some people also find Andrew Dice Clay funny.  I, um, don't.

What this mostly does is offer insight into the sender-- who basically apologized only because people that she didn't intend to see it, saw it.  And even in that she took a dig and, basically, reinforced that she thought Obama's characater was related to poo flinging chimps.

OK.  Good to know, lady.  I mean, you didn't have my joke  vote in the first place but now you really don't have it.

But, what's that you say?  You have all those OTHER votes?  And they think just like you?  Oh, cool.  I guess.

She has black friends, so she is not racist. She only meant for the email to be seen by racists who would get a kick out of it. I will probaly forward it to Drunkys, Uncle Randy.

I do hear that about two or three times a week on the Monsters.

Luckily they have black friends so it's cool.

The difference between comics and elected officials is the comics try to be funny.

The difference between comics and elected officials is the comics try to be funny. Elected officials can often be unintentionally funny. As with their supporters.
