Is this one of those cruise deals? AMEX tour?
I've been to all those places, loved Rome. Stay at the Columbus Hotel (if it still exists). It's right up the square from the Vatican.

no, not a cruise deal.. I'll be planning it step by step on my own after Ireland.. we're taking an ef tours tours of scotland/ireland for the 1st part.. that'll save on the plane costs and after that, I'm exquisitely anal about 'trip planning' and will spend an insane amount of time planning the rest.. since I did it before, I know more about what I want to stay and what I want to do so it'll be somewhat easier..
I want to stay in the ponte sisto/piazza navona area of Rome, it's perfectly situated for walking.. literally 15 mins from Vatican in one direct and 15 mins to the Colosseum in the other..
