When you have that much of a hair (religious or not) up your ass about gay marriage, hell...gay anything...there's more to the story than doctrine enforcer.
It's like an ex smoker, ex fatty, ex slob...their adamant, militarily so. And the reason they are is because they don't want to slip.
I don't know whether Rick had a high hard one in the mouth (or he put one in a mouth) as a teen or he just included images, during jerk sessions, but he comes off fearful, even paranoid...and not as just some schmuck who's religiously vigilant.
I agree with Kell. He wants laws and norms in place to protect him from himself.
