6.1 magnitude earthquake shakes Panama: US goverment

Quote
WASHINGTON: A strong earthquake measuring 6.1 hit Panama early today, the US government reported.

The epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 3:19 am (local time), was located 179 kilometres (111 miles) south of the city of David, near the border with Costa Rica , according to the US Geological Survey .

There was no immediate report of casualties or damage. The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
