If I understood an article in the paper correctly, they disproved the possibility that either family member in question was the birth father. That would have explained a lot. I knew a woman when I used to go to twelve step stuff that had a child by her father and she never recovered. She finally committed enough crimes to be put away for a long time.
If it was that the child drowned, I can't imagine trying to cover that up however it seems to be the likely case. It's a pretty fair assumption that the family was more screwed up than most and the whole truth may never be known.
