You have a right to come to my house and conscript me. It means you believe in slavery. You are going to enslave not only me but the janitor at my hospital, the person who cleans my office, the assistants, the nurses. … You are basically saying you believe in slavery,” said Paul (R-Ky.), who is an ophthalmologist.

He's taking the argument/debate to the extreme, conveniently omitting that health care (even with single payer in the mix) will not deny medical personnel compensation for their efforts...nor will it stop private practice that may not want to participate in those programs.

When the midterm elections of 2010 are examined by historians fifty years or so from now, it will be noted that either the downfall of our nation came at the hands of a distinct fringe group of the Republican party. Or that the salvation of our political system came about at the hands of a massive case of voter's remorse.

For those of the "Throw the bums out!" mentality, remember the old cliche': The grass isn't always greener on the other dide.

Normally I can 'see' how they make the leap to that extreme.. this time though, I can't.  a right to healthcare means I'm 'conscripting' a janitor? an office cleaner? That stretch is way too far to make... especially since it's only the doctor I'm putting into slavery, I plan on paying the janitor and office cleaner..

The sad part about what he said is, you and I know a few people who think exactly the same thing, who would have read that and nodded their heads in agreement. It's pure insanity.

aren't those 'moral codes' all about doing things for free? in a voluntary way? So is he saying that doctors should care for people and not charge them?

'Throw the bums out!" is a good idea in theory. The reality is though that only nut-ball-whack-o-fucking-nuts were elected in their place..

but I think you're right. I think 50 years from now we'll look back and find ourselves shocked at just how racist and crazy this time in our history was..  To go off topic a second. It's so fucking crazy that I am thoroughly convinced the GOP will do everything in their power to tank the debt ceiling movement in order to steal the Obama/Osama win from this president..  Before last week I thought there was a chance, in the last minute, that the GOP would work with this admin to figure that whole ordeal out since they know just how bad it will be if it's not 'raised'.... but now, with this 'win' on Obama, they will stop at nothing to kill any progress he makes..up to and including destroying the world economy and our own economy on apocalyptic proportions..just to see his numbers fall

Will it make Obama look bad? I don't think so; or at least I don't hope so. Obama is offering compromise, Boehner at the behest of the Teabaggers, is refusing to compromise.

When that comes out in the wash the Republican Party will suffer, and suffer greatly.

PAUL: Technically, they are. . . . there’s no authority [in the Constitution]. Article I, Section 8 doesn’t say I can set up an insurance program for people. What part of the Constitution are you getting it from? The liberals are the ones who use this General Welfare Clause. . . . That is such an extreme liberal viewpoint that has been mistaught in our schools for so long and that’s what we have to reverse—that very notion that you’re presenting.
 
WALLACE: Congressman, it’s not just a liberal view. It was the decision of the Supreme Court in 1937 when they said that Social Security was constitutional under Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution.
 
PAUL: And the Constitution and the courts said slavery was legal to, and we had to reverse that.
