Umm,
yeah!
GOP frontrunner Mitt Romney — who has based his campaign on his sometimes controversial record as a corporate czar — sparked a furor today with the remark that he likes “being able to fire people.”
The former Bay State governor was discussing health insurance when he said that insurers give fairer prices if they know they will be held accountable.
“It also means that if you don’t like what they do, you can fire them. I like being able to fire people who provide services to me,” Romney said.
The remark comes as Romney is fighting new claims from his Republican rivals that he is a ruthless corporate “raider” who is out of touch with the common man.
The campaign went into defense mode immediately after the event, pumping up “Life Is a Highway” at ear-splitting decibels as reporters scrambled to interview those at the breakfast and Romney hurried from the room.
Romney, who is the front-runner in New Hampshire, emphasized earlier during the breakfast that he had worked his way to the top.
“Some people imagine that I just went directly to the top positions ... I started off, actually, at the entry level,” he told the Nashua Chamber of Commerce this morning at the Radisson Hotel as voters prepare to weigh in on the first in the nation primary tomorrow.
