The more I hear people, fight against their own best interests, the more I become convinced that it's not so much self loathing as it is people so devout in their ideology, they just don't ignore the conflict...they're immune to it.
Grenell doesn't see himself as an openly gay man doing himself harm with party identification, he sees himself as an openly gay man...doing the right thing. His politics, and outlook therein, trump anything "homosexual." Glory to the cause. The part, that in the grand scheme of things, where he's not ultimately included doesn't truly register, nor even if it did, it won't be anything he looses sleep over...as I said...Glory to the cause.
The ideology he and many other Republican homosexuals identify with (their take on spending, taxes, national security, states rights, ect., ect.) is appealing and carries more weight with their overview, than any ultimate exclusion that's in the mix as a party dynamic.
Just my two cents.
