NBC reported Friday that CIA director David Petraeus has resigned from the CIA, citing an extramarital affair.

NBC's Andrea Mitchell said the resignation was submitted in a letter dated Friday and was accepted by the White House.

In a letter, Petraeus noted that he had been married for 37 years and had exercised "extremely poor judgment' in conducting an extramarital affair.

Petraues took over as head of the CIA in September of 2011 following his tour as head of allied forces in Afghanistan.

Spokesman: House majority leader knew of Petraeus matter in October

House majority leader Eric Cantor talked to an FBI official in late October about former CIA Director David Petraeus' involvement in an affair, a spokesman for the congressman told CNN Sunday.

Doug Heye said Cantor had a conversation with the whistleblower about the affair and the national security concerns involved in the matter.

The New York Times reported Saturday that on October 31, Cantor's chief of staff phoned the FBI to inform them about the call between the congressman and the FBI official.

The affair that brought an end to Petraeus' tenure as CIA director came to light during an FBI investigation into a complaint that his biographer Paula Broadwell was sending harassing e-mails to another woman close to him, a U.S. official said Saturday

Peter King(R) is losing his mind all over the TV shows today saying that "the House and Senate intelligence committees weren't informed that there was an FBI investigation into the situation until Friday."  he's calling it borderline treasonous  that Obama would hear about it at 5pm on election day and not saying anything until Friday.. the right is pimping another 'insider' leak that Obama knew and blackmailed the General to keep  him from testifying about the fanciful 'stand down' order that was never given..

I want to know what Cantor was doing with this information. ..why would a 'whistleblower' go to him? for some political gain?

I want to know who Cantor told this information to... if he kept it to himself, why? Did he plan to use it during the debt-crisis talks?

I want to know if Cantor ever approached the General with this knowledge and demanded the General find something to use against Obama in the Benghazi issue or he (cantor) would be forced to go to the press with this information..

Hell, it would seem only fair to ask  the same questions of Cantor that they want to ask of Obama...

(CNN) -- The scandal that took down former CIA Director David Petraeus has ensnared another powerful general.

Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, is under investigation by the Defense Department for allegedly sending inappropriate messages to Jill Kelley, the woman whose complaints about e-mails from another woman led to the discovery of Petraeus' affair and his eventual resignation.

While details remained sketchy Tuesday, President Barack Obama ordered that Allen's nomination to become NATO's supreme allied commander be put on hold pending the outcome of the investigation. He will retain his post as the commander of U.S. and allied forces in Afghanistan pending Senate confirmation of a successor, according to the Defense Department.

Allen has denied any wrongdoing, a senior defense official said.
