Rick Scott Wants Florida Colleges To Offer $10,000 Bachelor's Degrees
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/27/gov-scott-challenges-uni_n_2197188.html?utm_hp_ref=politics&ir=Politics

ST. PETERSBURG -- Gov. Rick Scott has challenged state colleges to provide bachelor's degree programs that don't cost more than $10,000, and although the proposal drew both praise and scorn, the head of the first school to take the bait thinks he can make it work.

Scott announced the plan to address rising college costs and student debt today at St. Petersburg College, where its president, Bill Law, said he would target the school's Technology Management and Development program for the first $10,000 degree.

"We're working through the parts. We don't know exactly how it's all going to work yet," Law said. "We think we can make this work."

Typically, a student pays just more $13,000 for a bachelor's degree from a state college. The figure rises to $18,000 for students who spend two years at a state college and then two more at a state university, and $24,000 for a full four-year run at a state university.

ok, besides the fucked up English in that 1st Bold sentence.... a bachelor's is expensive.. and it's not like it's an 'elite' degree or anything.. more of a 'good enough starting to point or point that you can also stop at if you'd like to' kinda thing.. so I'm trying to figure out the 'scorn' he's getting for this..

Quote
The Florida Democratic Party, meanwhile, called the proposal "another half-baked scheme.

Sure, it's Rick Sctt so there's definitely some ulterior motive involved.. but even a fucknut can have a brilliant idea once in his life and I'm trying to see why this one isn't that one time?

any one care to comment?

I don't see the problem if the degrees are limited to the less academically rigorous like Education, Psychology and the like?  Hell, I'm a Daytona CC (now State) grad.  Biology 101 is Biology 101 any place you go and the class size will probably be half.  Nothing like being a frosh and taking a class in the auditorium with 300 other students.  And what is not included in the figures is that the biggest cost of going away to a university is room and board.  If you can stay with mommy and daddy and go to your local state college you'll save a fuckin fortune in 4 years.  Of course you'll have no place to fuck and they probably wont like you getting waisted but there's always trade offs in this fucked up shit called life.

Jb's tuition for the upcoming semester is around 3100, so it's not that far off now.

That's what I'm thinking.

and stuff like BS in nursing? BCC offers that  thru UCF, but they charge 'state college' prices.. why? lower the price.. it's thru a community college anyway..

It's a Bachelor's degree.. they aren't superior education as it is.. if an AA is like 'elementary' school, thn the BS/BA is like jr. High. It's your masters and PHD's where you need the state colleges and more complicated course, thus higher tuition..

but a bachelors in many area are great 'working' points if you don't want to go on..

but, what I've been reading.. is this is his idea to 'privatize' schools more.. not just get this into the good accredited and stable state community colleges.. like BCC or even Daytona CC.. but like  'herzings' and 'kaisers'.. That's where the 'catch' is... he'll give the fly by night scam schools accreditation for a cpl years, fill their coffers with the unsuspecting, bilk them at 10K a pop.. and it'll take years to un-fuck the system he's trying to fuck..

I am for his program if it doesn't involve the shady bullshit.. but it doesn't look like I can get the good without the shady..

this, I don't agree with.. not totally.. sure in some cases it can happen, but I think the 'market' would weed out the joke schools prettty quickly..

Reducing this further, to create a cheap four-year degree, will undermine the quality and value of the education, hurting our students’ chances to compete successfully in our 21st Century economy. I am sure that is not the message that you would like to convey.

this part I agree with tho..

Of course, the cost to the student of a Bachelor’s Degree could be decreased further without sacrificing quality if the State of Florida were to appropriate more funding to the colleges. The burden then would not be placed on the student and the colleges would be able to maintain and even enhance the high quality of their instruction.

Thank you for the links...never thought I'd see the day when I kinda like an idea taken from Rick Perry and offered by Skeletor.. I mean rick Scott..HA!

Bullshit. They're going to jack up everything else like rooms and food and god forbid books to fuck the students over.

There are no rooms at a state college.  There's food everywhere.  Books are online.  You're sounding like a Tea Party psycho.

"Weeding out the joke schools" is easier written than done. The Independent Colleges accredidatio  is a joke - one of my colleagues from the Palm Beach are told a group of us that a school had been approved to do surgical tech training. The "school" was in the back side of a ahir salon and the students practiced making stiches in bags of hair.....
This is, as the letter from Martinez hints, a nice little sound bite.
A Bachelor's degree is not just a starting point - for some, it is the ticket to a career, an entree into a career field. MS/MA and PhD are not guarantees of employability.
I think the way to make higher education more affordable will also remove the most barriered folks from the process. Most freshman and sophmore basic courses can be offered to high acheiving HS students through dual enrollment and on-line for others. If you can chip away at a degree that way (and require that the state colleges reduce tuition for those classes) the cost of a BS/BA can go down. Once the junior and senior level classes are broached by a student more specialized (expensive) instruction kicks in. A little old History major like me didn't cost FSU that much because all I needed was professors and classroom space. A STEM major requires a more highly skilled instructional staff, lab space and supplies. Health care majors cause even bigger capacity problems because they need clinical hours either in a facility or in a really good sim lab.
In short, this is a bigger problem to solve than Mr. Business Man Rick Scott makes out.
