Trump's an asshat. He can't seem to handle the fact that public figures wax and wane in popularity...and it just KILLS him he's not the go to, comb over IT GUY anymore. Now to maintain his popularity (or at least in his mind)...he's got to do outrageous shit and get his adoring fix from people (the right-wing fringe) who he wouldn't fuck'in be caught dead around.
