When you have that much of a hair (religious or not) up your ass about gay marriage, hell...gay anything...there's more to the story than doctrine enforcer.
It's like an ex smoker, ex fatty, ex slob...their adamant, militarily so. And the reason they are is because they don't want to slip.
I don't know whether Rick had a high hard one in the mouth (or he put one in a mouth) as a teen or he just included images, during jerk sessions, but he comes off fearful, even paranoid...and not as just some schmuck who's religiously vigilant.
I agree with Kell. He wants laws and norms in place to protect him from himself.

I believe that. The civil rights and responsibilities for one must pertain to all. Thus, to discriminate against one class and not another is wrong for me. If we are endowed by our Creator with rights, then why shouldn't those be attainable by all? Simply put, if the Lord made homosexuals as well as heterosexuals, why should I discriminate against their civil marriage? I shouldn't, and I won't.
So I added my name to the petition from senators asking the Supreme Court to declare the law that prohibits same-sex marriage unconstitutional.

Funny how evolving on something, like a civil right, seems to involve being pressed on the matter + popular sentiment + plus checking how it polls with your constituents.
Bill would devolve just as quickly if the polling numbers among his constituents turned around on this issue. He ain't fool'in no one.
