It would be "regrettable" if the identities of the men photographed with Sen. John McCain in Syria this week are confirmed to be individuals responsible for a year-old kidnapping, the Arizona senator's office said in a statement Thursday.

There has been confusion and conflicting reports about who exactly the men pictured with McCain are, and whether or not they were involved in last year's kidnapping. CNN has been unable to confirm the identities of the men in the photograph. Nonetheless, McCain's office was quick to reject speculation the Republican knowingly met with men accused of the abduction.

McCain entered the war-torn country on Monday and met with commanders of the Free Syrian Army, who are fighting forces loyal to Bashar al Assad for control of the country. He was the first U.S. senator to travel to Syria since the civil war broke out there two years ago, and told CNN after leaving that his conviction the U.S. must become more involved in the country's conflict had intensified.

Opponents of a greater U.S. role in Syria say the presence of terrorists among the rebels should prevent lethal aid from being delivered to opposition forces.

A report in the Beirut-based Daily Star newspaper suggested a photo released by McCain's office from the trip showed the Arizona senator standing alongside two men accused of kidnapping 11 Lebanese Shiite pilgrims in May 2012.

The paper cited family members of the kidnapped pilgrims – along with one pilgrim who was kidnapped himself and later released – identifying Mohamad Nour and Abu Ibrahim in one of the handout photos from McCain, which the Republican also posted to Twitter.

So what did they tell McCain they wanted while he was there?

In their meeting with McCain, leaders of the Syrian rebel forces pressed the United States to provide them with weapons to continue their fight against Assad. They specifically said they need ammunition, as well as antitank and antiaircraft weapons, McCain said in an interview with CNN on Wednesday.

"They do not understand why we won't help them," he told Anderson Cooper.

I think I saw this movie once.. Ya know the one where we arm and train a rebel force that we know to be be terroristic  in nature, but since they're terrorizing our enemy we figure 'eh fuck it, what's the worst that can happen'.. and it ended with some building falling down in NYC..


maybe this will explain why Obama is leary of arming them? ya know, since they're also terrorist..  I doubt it with such a single-minded,war junkie like McCain.. but  maybe with others who were on the fence..

either way.. could you image the utter meltdown of the Right had it been Obama in the photo with these guys? 100% impeachment proceeding within 30 days... and afterwards  Issa would convene a criminal probe to have Obama jailed for being a Manchurian candidate..McCain would them claim he should be president by default because the imposter that is Obama should have never won.. and Romney would have piped up that no, he should.. so to appease them both Congress would create some kind of new 'Second Triumvirate' with Paul Ryan or Ted Cruz being the 3rd..  Obamacare wouldn't have to be repealed, because Obama was a terrorist the whole time so it would just be invalid.. not to mention everything else he ever did.. Jesus, it'd be a republican's wet-dream..HA!

You're absolutely right.  Were we dealing with Senator Obama, under a President McCain, and had Senator Obama defied State Department orders to not put their visiting bodies anywhere near Syrian Rebels, let alone Syria itself...especially for a "fuck your orders" photo op with said Rebels...only to find out a day or two later your grinning mug was right next to the grinning mugs of two individuals involved with the political/religious kidnapping of 11 Shiite pilgrims (and trust me...that kidnapping had everything to do with politics and religion)...Senator Obama would have been fucking eviscerated by all the Republican powers that be.

You're also correct about the lack of outrage, when it's ideological.  They just turn it on and off.  Despite circumstance being similar or the same, despite reason. One of ours? Eh. One of theirs? Holy shit! Even though it's the same, it's completely different! Burn the witch!
