Quote
Bill Maher closed Friday's episode of "Real Time with Bill Maher" by going off on one of his favorite subjects: Christians who refuse to help others, despite their religion's call to do so.

"It's okay if you don't want to feed the hungry, heal the sick or house the homeless. Just don't say you're doing it for their own good," Maher said.

He continued: "Don't say you'd like to help people, but your hands are tied, because if you did it would cause a culture of dependency, or go against the Bible, or worst of all, rob them of their freedom to be sick and hungry."

"Just admit you're selfish," he added.

He cited new laws in Missouri cutting $96 million in food stamps, claiming that it was the latest so-called Bible belt state failing to take care of those in need.

Waiters in particular are often victims of Christians withholding tips in order to push their religion, Maher said. A fake $10 bill with a Bible verse was held up as especially loathsome, as was the story of a gay waiter who was refused a tip because of his sexuality.

"Not tipping a gay waiter will not make him want to put his penis in a woman. It will make him want to put his penis in your pasta primavera," Maher quipped.

I love the bolded line!

*repost*

I know Christians who live their Christianity and I know Christians who wear it.

The former don't assume and require no prerequisites, they just do, and they do so without the need for praise or recognition of themselves or their religion as the source that they feel inspired those deeds or actions.

The latter...talk. Help is conditional and suspicions abound. "Pat me on the head and give my religion a shout out", is par for the course. Politics defines their religion, as much as their religion defines their politics. The two are inseparable and they can't fathom how you can separate them and still call yourself a Christian.

*end repost*

The new crop of Conservative Christian (at least from my observations) seem to find Capitalism and Christianity interchangeable, or at least somehow not so far removed from one another. In what exactly...I'm not sure. Somewhere along the way, they've decided Jesus not only wants them to be fabulously wealthy, but would excuse (or find little problem with) being so at the expense of others or society.  While I could imagine Jesus probably not really being down with...the lazy...I also don't think he'd really be down with redefining what the lazy is, in an effort to accommodate and re-imagine a religion that finds immeasurably more favor with the wealthy over the poor, infirm/elderly. I mean otherwise, most of his supposed ministry and the major theme/'s/messages therein, become moot.
