Meanwhile, I've never heard so many lies come out of McConnell's mouth. Did he forget this?

would be nice if Reid actually did do something; his threats aren't too credible.

I'm torn on this.

First, I know it's needed... but could he just have changed the filibuster rule to the way it used to be when you had to actually filibuster and not just say you were going to?

2nd, the GOP has been asking for this for years so it is definitely necessary, but I don't like that it's only for judicial(non-supreme court) nominees and appointments.. I'd rather see a sweeping 'option' for any fucking legislation out there.. let it pass or  fail with 50+1 instead of the 60+

and C.  When the GOP gets power back (and they eventually will), they'll do this on day one just for the payback.. and they will do it for every single congressional item there is and not just the judges and political appointments like Reid is doing.. it'll be a 'reap what you sow' moment that's going to suck for us..

all good points, ekg. I think the "payback" one is why he's been so reluctant to change the rules before. But this is getting just crazy.

If rules are left as they are, then we'll be looking at dems doing payback when repubs are in power and then it all just continues this stupid way, with nothing getting done.

Maybe doing it for just certain nominees is Reid's way of limiting potential payback damage.

Fox News commentator Charles W. Cooke on Thursday warned that the recent move from the Senate to end filibusters on judicial nominees could lead to a “military coup.”

Just why? Why the fuck would anyone say that? Even if you did a Glenn Beck chalkboard line to infinity...why?

I don't think that would happen.. we didn't like Bush's 'surge' and a 1/2 dozen other things but after whining about it the Dems gave the President his agenda.. as they should have.  I don't really think the Dems would do nearly 1/2 of the crap the GOP is doing now.. We're just not an irrational party the way the Tea-party is..

Maybe doing it for just certain nominees is Reid's way of limiting potential payback damage.

I don't think it's going to matter how much or how little they use it..

When Obama was elected, it was overheard by someone from another board we used to be on.... "Now let's see how they like it"..

It was said by a Republican.. and it was in regards to how the Dems reacted with Bush and all the criticism they gave him. Now, it didn't matter that those criticisms were things like... oh, idk  Tongue lying to us so we'd invade a sovereign nation and depose their leader while killing 100's of thousands of their inhabitants and then erroneously claiming 'mission accomplished' 15 mins later..  or the outing of an undercover CIA agent who just so happen to be using the same undercover story as a dozen other undercover agents and their assets thus putting them all in danger and losing valuable intel on 'the war on terror' all for political payback for telling people the war-chant was a lie.. or for screwing up a hurricane relief effort so badly that we looked like cavemen seeing fire for the 1st time.. the reasons for the criticism didn't matter, it didn't matter that all of it was absolutely justified.. the point was the Dems chastise their guy and now wait and see how the Dems like it in return..

It's not going to matter if Reid never actually uses the option that he's invoked.. it doesn't matter if he uses it to stop an earth-killing asteroid from slamming into us..  The "Now lets see how you like it" party will put up legislation to ban abortion, repeal the ACA, dis-allow gays in the military, absolve all gay-marriage by making an amendments banning it,immigration reform by mass round-up and deportation.. and they'll invoke the same 'nuclear option' to bar any resistance from the Left..

we're not playing with 'sane' or 'fair' people..

with that being said.. I totally agree that there just wasn't any other option. Obama won two elections and not just by the skin of his teeth.. He is entitled to certain liberties as the winner of 2 elections.. the gOP, wanting to nullify anything and everything having to do with him, decided to make it hard for him the 1st time around and the 2nd... decided they would just stop and shutdown the gov't for as long as he resides in the big house..They forced this option, but make no mistake.. the payback will be a fucking bloodbath no matter how much or how little it's actually used Wink

case in point.. from Howie's link

Quote
Cooke said of the decision to allow for a simple majority to pass nominees through the Senate. “They are very frustrated that Republicans have been blocking their nominations as they blocked Republican nominees when Bush was president.”

"see how you like it"..

their 'tit' to the Left's 'tat' is always going to exponentially more extreme..

Thought this was a good collection of info about  it -
http://goldrushcam.com/sierrasuntimes/index.php/news/mariposa-daily-news-2013/165-november/10988-heres-why-the-filibuster-rule-change-is-a-big-deal

The graphic at the bottom includes a comparison about how long appointees waited under Bush vs under Obama (spoiler: a lot less time under Bush)

Would be nice if this brought some sanity back to the repubs - I mean, they've filibustered bills that they later vote overwhelming in favor of! that's just stupid. But not sure they're done being the stupid party.

Like ekg I wish it applied to everything.

Unlike ekg, I'm comfortable with the ramifications if we can get some fucking bills passed.
