Midterms for a second term President, historically, go to the other party in the houses. Plus factor in apathy, gerrymandering, Voter ID played some role as well I'm sure and money...lots and lots of money.

Dems/progressives/liberals while passionate, aren't ordered or borg. Cat herding is a descriptor I've heard used that I think aptly applies when it comes to voting and dems/progressives.  Say what you want about the GOTP and voting against their own best interests, but, with few exceptions, they do not NOT vote out of a sense of apathy, anger, or any reason that Dems rationalize not voting for a candidate. Couple that with the fact, that while both Dem and Repub might be fed up with the two party system and their choices therein, Dems (or those that identify as such/closely) are more likely to cast their ballot for a 3rd party candidate, if one exists that peeks their interest. Not to say that Repubs won't as well, but from everything I've read, it's not as common.

Repubs, with rare exceptions, will stand with their candidates. No if ands or buts. They do not, by in large, let disgruntlement keep them home or from putting a check next to their Reps name.
