licans on the House Judiciary panel shot down a proposal Thursday to prevent weapon sales to suspected terrorists.

In a party-line vote of 21-11, the committee Republicans killed an amendment from Rep. Mike Quigley (D-Ill.) that would have blocked firearm purchases by those on the FBI's terrorist watch list. The vote came during the markup of legislation renewing certain provisions of the Patriot Act that are slated to expire later this month.

Quigley accused the Republicans of limiting certain civil liberties for the sake of fighting terrorism in the underlying Patriot Act bill, but refusing to restrict Second Amendment rights for the same purpose.

"We’re here today to try to resolve the question of how best to strike the proper balance between ensuring our national security and protecting our civil liberties,” Quigley said in a statement.

“Surely, we cannot look our constituents in the eye and tell them in good faith that we have decided to enact public policy that restrains some of their civil liberties for the greater good but that we refused to ask the same of suspected terrorists. I know we are smarter than that.”

Of all the lobbyists on the Hill that are the most despicable, the NRA is the worst.

Judiciary Republicans who spoke against the Quigley amendment Thursday — including Reps. James Sensenbrenner Jr. (Wis.) and Louie Gohmert (Texas) — argued that restricting sales to people on the watch list would violate the Second Amendment rights of those placed on the list by mistake.

Louie Gohmert? Louie 'terror-baby' Gohmert.. who thinks pregger momma's are sneaking into the country, dropping their babies here so the baby can get a USA citizenship, leaving with that baby to live in a terror training camp until that baby is an adult and can come back into this country since it was born here and successfully carry out a terrorist attack upon this country.. can't find it in himself to stop someone on the terrorist watch-list from getting a gun?

All this would have done is set up a McCarthyesque black list of people denied their rights with no due process or legal recourse.

Questions for people that think that this is a good idea:
- How do you get on the list? Are the conditions/criteria publicly defined?
- How do you get your name off of the list if you don’t really belong on it?
- Does the government even notify you if you are put on the list?
- What’s to stop some anti-gun zealot bureaucrat from putting every member of the N.R.A. on the list?
- If the people on the list are really terrorists, what the heck are they doing running around loose in the first place?

Some idiot on twitter responded to me that there might be some six year old kid mistakenly on the terrorist watch list and we certainly wouldn't want to deny HIM his 2nd Amendment rights, would we?

Hmmmmm, inconvenience versus potential terrorist...well of course we go ahead and sell to the possible terrorist...it makes perfect sense.  I mean who the fuck in their right mind would want to temper caution against safety...that's stupid as hell!

So in essence...they'd rather have 50 potential terror suspects, who are under investigation, have whatever firearm they can purchase...than one person mistakenly denied the ability to purchase a firearm for X amount of time.

Nothings perfect, but jesus christ.

In a video released today Al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn encourages terrorists to use American gun shows to arm themselves for potential Mumbai-style attacks.  Gadahn's video laid out a new tactic for Al Qaeda to continue their murderous terrorist agenda:


America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms. You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle, without a background check, and most likely without having to show an identification card. So what are you waiting for?
 
At gun shows buyers can purchase guns from private sellers without passing a background check. An investigation by the City of New York showed that even buyers that identified themselves as people who "probably couldn't pass a background check" were able to purchase guns at gun shows.  The investigation also showed the wide variety of guns available at gun shows.
 
In addition, people on terrorist watch lists are not forbidden from purchasing guns and many have done just that. Gadahn's instructions come in the wake of Associated Press reporting that showed that more than 200 people with suspected terrorist ties bought guns legally in the United States last year. Following the AP report Representative Mike Quigley introduced an amendment to the Patriot Act that would give the Attorney General the authority to block gun sales to individuals on terror watch lists. The amendment was voted down.
