The house republicans don't give a damn about the debt ceiling - all they want to do is discredit the current administration.
Why is it that Bush got just about everything he ever wanted regardless of who was in control but it's not that way now with Obama. Not saying that I would necessarily have wanted him to but I thought he missed a window of opportunity in the first 6 months or so when he had the 'mandate'.

it really is that simple. The Dem's are so afraid of being labeled 'anti-war', 'anti-capitalism', 'anti-free trade' 'pro-terrorist'...that they cave in on any GOP/Borg issue. The joke has always been "How will the Dem's screw
this up"... we saw it in 2008/10 when they had the house/senate/oval office. Dems come in varying degrees.. some are very liberal some are almost to the right of Sarah Palin in the conservative-ness.. so to round them up is like rounding up a bunch of feral cats.
otoh, the GOP act like the Borg.. a singular mind, with a singular mission.. and that makes them much more powerful regardless of whether they are in the majority or not.
