Ed Schultz suspended from MSNBC after calling Laura Ingraham a ‘right wing slut’

MSNBC suspended host Ed Schultz for a week on Wednesday after Schultz called rival pundit Laura Ingraham “a right-wing slut” during a radio broadcast teh day before. Paul Farhi reports:

Schultz apologized for the comment on his TV program, “The Ed Show,” on Wednesday night, saying he had used “vile and inappropriate language” in referring to Ingraham. “I am deeply sorry, and I apologize,” he said. “It was wrong, uncalled for, and I recognize the severity of what I said. I apologize to you, Laura, and ask for your forgiveness.”

Schultz’s slur was a response to Ingraham’s criticism of President Obama’s trip to Ireland. Ingraham had noted that Obama was touring Ireland while devastating tornadoes were hitting the United States, including one that killed 116 people in Joplin, Mo.

“President Obama is going to be visiting Joplin, Mo., on Sunday, but you know what [Republicans are] talking about, like this right-wing slut, what’s her name? Laura Ingraham?” Schultz said on the air. “Yeah, she’s a talk slut. You see, she was, back in the day, praising President Reagan when he was drinking a beer overseas. But now that Obama’s doing it, they’re working him over.”

I've seen what he said called "Epithet" and "Slur".. in some headlines and I wonder.. is it really either of those?

I guess by their true definitions it is.. but I thought both of those were saved for  slams against gays and blacks.. and I just don't know that 'slut' ranks up there with "nigger" or "faggot"..

does it?

A slur is just an insult.  It used to be commonly "slur on the family name"  (i.e. those Johnson boys are nothing but trash).  In that sense, this was a slur.

That said, he wasn't really indicating that she was, in point of fact, a slut who slept around or the like.  Just that she followed the party line a little too easily....  It's a figure of speech.

I don't mind strong opinions, even opinions with hyperbole and overexpression, being aired.  MSNBC apparently did.

If I were a commentator I wouldn't even have words like that in my 'ram'. Personally, I could give a shit. I think when broadcasting to potentially millions of people, it would be common sense to stick with words that don't push buttons in that way but the climate of 'news' has so devolved that I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing is staged.

Did Ingraham  do an about face or something close over the years? I could have sworn that when I used to hear her frequently on Imus back in the 90's she was not a whack job.
