a long.. but great read..

it makes you think what 'could' have been had he not been black. Because as Chuck and I have theorized, he is too aware of his color.. and what that color means to too many in this country. He's had to play too safe in order to try and appease those who will always hate him for that color. They may not be your David Duke racists, but they are the people who just don't feel comfortable with 'black' being 'above' them..and those are the people he played 'down' too to the detriment of his party, his intelligence and his country..

The truly decisive move that broke the arc of history was his handling of the stimulus. The public was desperate for a leader who would speak with confidence, and they were ready to follow wherever the president led. Yet instead of indicting the economic policies and principles that had just eliminated eight million jobs, in the most damaging of the tic-like gestures of compromise that have become the hallmark of his presidency — and against the advice of multiple Nobel-Prize-winning economists — he backed away from his advisers who proposed a big stimulus, and then diluted it with tax cuts that had already been shown to be inert. The result, as predicted in advance, was a half-stimulus that half-stimulated the economy. That, in turn, led the White House to feel rightly unappreciated for having saved the country from another Great Depression but in the unenviable position of having to argue a counterfactual — that something terrible might have happened had it not half-acted.

ironically, this was also the time where we on the left should have seen and known he would always cave into those who will hate him for no reason other than his name and his color.. and the others who will hate him just because of his political party... regardless of what he does, what he offers, even if it's their own talking points he offers to them.. these kinds of people will never agree to be 'with' him in anyway. While these should be the people he  never considers the 'side' of, he instead goes out of his way to placate and appease them.. to his own and this country's detriment..

Like most Americans, at this point, I have no idea what Barack Obama — and by extension the party he leads — believes on virtually any issue. The president tells us he prefers a “balanced” approach to deficit reduction, one that weds “revenue enhancements” (a weak way of describing popular taxes on the rich and big corporations that are evading them) with “entitlement cuts” (an equally poor choice of words that implies that people who’ve worked their whole lives are looking for handouts). But the law he just signed includes only the cuts. This pattern of presenting inconsistent positions with no apparent recognition of their incoherence is another hallmark of this president’s storytelling. He announces in a speech on energy and climate change that we need to expand offshore oil drilling and coal production — two methods of obtaining fuels that contribute to the extreme weather Americans are now seeing. He supports a health care law that will use Medicaid to insure about 15 million more Americans and then endorses a budget plan that, through cuts to state budgets, will most likely decimate Medicaid and other essential programs for children, senior citizens and people who are vulnerable by virtue of disabilities or an economy that is getting weaker by the day. He gives a major speech on immigration reform after deporting a million immigrants in two years, breaking up families at a pace George W. Bush could never rival in all his years as president.

but it still doesn't make it anymore palatable.. because in his quest for 'unity' with people who will never unite behind him.. he has fucked up more than had he just rolled right over those who roll over him continuously and happily..

But the arc of history does not bend toward justice through capitulation cast as compromise. It does not bend when 400 people control more of the wealth than 150 million of their fellow Americans. It does not bend when the average middle-class family has seen its income stagnate over the last 30 years while the richest 1 percent has seen its income rise astronomically. It does not bend when we cut the fixed incomes of our parents and grandparents so hedge fund managers can keep their 15 percent tax rates. It does not bend when only one side in negotiations between workers and their bosses is allowed representation. And it does not bend when, as political scientists have shown, it is not public opinion but the opinions of the wealthy that predict the votes of the Senate. The arc of history can bend only so far before it breaks.

So...what happened after that? The Republicans in Congress decided to save face. They decided to band together and filibuster, block, obstruct, and lie in order to keep the President from accomplishing anything else. Then, in the mid-term elections, their lies allowed an amazing number of stupid people to put in office a bunch of neophytes incapable of adding 1 and 1, which further exacerbated the President's ability to do anything...

And what did he do? With his hands tied behind his back he did all he could do to accomplish at least a minimum of progress. He had to compromise.

But now we're (collectively) blaming him for everything. We're ready to roll over the progressive grave and never, ever, ever allow a black man (or a woman, or a gay, or a hispanic, or an oriental, or anything other than a rich white fucking male) to be elected President because the rich white fucking male racists won't allow it!

Sheesh, I was so pissed off posting all that I forgot to post this:

Westen's op-ed rests upon a model of American politics in which the president in the not only the most important figure, but his most powerful weapon is rhetoric. The argument appears calculated to infuriate anybody with a passing familiarity with the basics of political science. In Westen's telling, every known impediment to legislative progress -- special interest lobbying, the filibuster, macroeconomic conditions, not to mention certain settled beliefs of public opinion -- are but tiny stick huts trembling in the face of the atomic bomb of the presidential speech. The impediment to an era of total an uncompromising liberal success is Obama's failure to properly deploy this awesome weapon.
 
Westen locates Obama's inexplicable failure to properly use his storytelling power in some deep-rooted aversion to conflict. He fails to explain why every president of the postwar era has compromised, reversed, or endured the total failure of his domestic agenda. Yes, even George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan infuriated their supporters by routinely watering down their agenda or supporting legislation utterly betraying them, and making rhetorical concessions to the opposition. (Ronald Reagan boasted of increasing agriculture subsidies and called for making the rich pay "their fair share" as part of a tax reform that did in fact increase the tax burden on the rich; Bill Clinton said "the era of big government is over" and ended welfare as an entitlement; etc., etc.)
