You cannot get any deeper into subtle stories and characters than those two outstanding movies.
Your problem, not that it is one and not that that's the correct term for it, is that you fail to
suspend belief when watching these movies. You spend too much time questioning why such and such character has to be wearing a dress as opposed to sitting back and watching the development of the character.
Mrs. Doubtfire, one of my favorite movies of all time, was not about Robin Williams running around in a dress. When I looked at Mrs. Doubtfire, or Tootsie for that matter, I didn't see a man in a dress.
I saw the character. I saw the character develop and become (in those cases) a better person within because of what he (the character) learned within the persona of Mrs. Doubtfire and/or Tootsie.
