CENTRAL FLORIDA -- Just six weeks after Florida began drug testing welfare applicants, WFTV uncovered numbers, which show that the program is already costing Central Florida taxpayers more than it saves.

9 Investigates' reporter George Spencer found very few applicants are testing positive for drugs.

On July 1, Florida began requiring a clean drug test before giving cash assistance to needy families.

The Department of Central Florida's (DCF) region tested 40 applicants and only two tested positive for drugs, officials said. One of the tests is being appealed.

DCF said it has been referring applicants to clinics where drug screenings cost between $30 and $35. The applicant pays for the test out of his or her own pocket and then the state reimburses him if they test comes back negative.

Therefore, the 38 applicants in the Central Florida area, who tested negative, were reimbursed at least $30 each and cost taxpayers $1,140.

Meanwhile, the state is saving less than $240 a month by refusing benefits to those two applicants who tested positive.

btw, I saw another news clip that Scott is funneling money away from the public hospitals who treat the elderly/poor and giving most of it to 'private' hospitals who don't have to see the peons if they don't want to.. and on top of that, 80% of that 'private' money is going to his healthcare centers..so 2 questions..

1, why can't 'private' companies subside off of 'private' money instead of sucking the gov't tit.. I mean, let them fail if they can't make it in their capitalism..

2, is this really what the Tea-Party wants in the elected officials? Is that the new libertarian? They don't do smoke-filled room deals that fuck the people, they just do it out in the open and the masses still love them for it?

Of course Gryff (and Wrongo) were totally for it! There's so many uninformed bigoted comments in the following I don't know where to start...I mean, really!, by what means does "she sees the people who do NOT want to be on financial assistance from the government"? Do they have a fucking stash somewhere so they don't need food stamps?

Not impossible at all. She and I may have differing views on this, but I've never thought she just wants to hand out money to anyone, no matter what they do.

I think one of the main differences between us is that she sees the people who do NOT want to be on financial assistance from the government and her job is helping these people who are just down right now as opposed to those who stay down but have their hands out. The vast majority of what she sees are not the ones who couldn't pass a piss test.

Although I'd like to see drugs legalized, I still firmly believe that most stoners have no interest in organizing toward it, as it would take away part of their "high" time. The only legal battle most of them are interested in is getting high and arguing "But Duuuuude, it should be legal anyways". As if THAT will have any effect on lawmakers.

Of course, the liberal bigot had a lot more to say too...I wonder what happened to the "bulk rate" $10 charge?

Some relatively good news on that subject today. The new law says that welfare applicants must pay for their own drug tests and be clean in order to receive. The Department of Children and Families has neotiated a bulk rate on the tests commonly used to certify Drug Free Workplace so applicants will only be out $10 until reimbursement.
The law still stinks, but at least the smell is a little less offensive now....

The simple fact is none of them want to accept the fact that poor knows no color, race, sex, or orientation. It can happen to everyone, not just druggies.

this is such bullshit.. out of 100 welfare recipients, this probably goes for 10% of them.. and those 10% will always be there, if they aren't getting gov't help then they are stealing from walmart.. if not walmart them they are selling drugs and mugging people.. you cannot disown an entire program because of the outliers.. but 'white power' numb-nuts are so afraid 'blackie' will get something for free they'll destroy the whole fucking world to stop that from happening.

I've had two interesting conversations in the last several weeks with, are ya ready for it?,...Tea partiers.

I should never assume anything, but I was the least bit shocked while engaging one, to see in very short order that they excused, explained away, or came at me with rhetoric to absolve (or ignore quite faithfully) policy from Tea party types, such as Rick...that are set in ideology and not for the common good.  They couldn't be persuaded one iota to see what's wrong with seeking legislation based on stereotypes, and where that kind of continued Governance leads.

THEN, there's this other self professed Tea partier, who away from public forums and friends therein...was expressing to me some serious and confusing doubts as to policies being sought and the attitudes and mind sets that shape them.  I was shocked to say the least, because they were breaking the golden rule and questioning the ideology at the heart of the "movement."

The more outlandish, stereotypes setting policy, and destructive against the common good the devout seem hell bent on perpetuating...the more reality seeps in and forms little cracks.

I'm sure this person wouldn't be called a "true" Tea partier, because much like the GOP...you don't break rank and file, you don't admit flaws in the ideology...and you sure as hell don't question.

It turned out to be a very good convo actually...one I hope gave some substance to this persons pause, instead of guilt for daring to be an individual who doesn't tow the party line.

Then shortly after, I read an article that was highlighting different "tea party cells" that were very confused with this all out war on the EPA.  So much so, that it's creating fractures within the party.

One thing I've learned in life, and from recent happenings, is if you live by absolutes...you'll constantly be at odds with yourself.
