It’s not a matter of instant gratification; it’s a matter of recognizing what the problems are and trying to correct those.  I posted on here a couple of weeks ago about the true nature of the recession (as opposed to the financial crisis – two separate, although related, things).   As I had mentioned to ekg, the recovery actually began in Jun 2009, too early for the stimulus to have had much effect, assuming that it could have.  But our recovery has been shitty.  The only other comparison I can make was the Great Depression, when we pursued similar policies.  We’ve had other severe recessions (early 80’s for example) and even depressions like the 1920 one, that we’ve recovered better than  this one.

What exactly do you think the Republicans could have done to cooperate with Obama that would have made the recovery quicker?

to start.. not scare the shit out of everyone screaming the the Kenyan socialist muslim was changing the very fabric of this country and turning it into some 'European' country.... If we 'pursued similar policies' before than that was simple bullshit meant to make the populous, business and wall street not trust him.. and with all those tightened sphincters, we simply stumbled along until the masses caught on that it was just more scare tatics from the right.... BUt initially all that bullshit scared people and stopped a faster recovery from happening, had they been a little more cooperative and a little less bombastic, who know what things would look like now.

Imagine if the GOP ran as many of the Clint Eastwood GM add type town halls instead of the ones where they didn't correct people insane 'killing grandma' type fears... you have to admit the GOP played into the hands of the paranoid schizo's and let them go do any damge they could.. had they just been a little more "McCain" and corrected the fears of the race-o-phobes (yes, there are those whether you'll admit it or not) and been more "This is America, and while we may have gotten knocked down, we get back up.. it's what we do in this country"  and a little less

(you don't have to watch all, just the first few minutes is sufficient... )

who knows how much better it could have been.. what I am positive about is, that it wouldn't have been any worse..

from moment one, he's been heckled while giving a speech before congress, he was interrupted 48 times in a 20 minute interview with Bill O, Jan Brewer shook her finger at him and then claimed she felt threatened... all the while others were ranting about how he wasn't born here, how he hates this country, how he's really Muslim.. you can't tell me none of that hurt this country..

had the GOP been more like

it would have helped exponentially... there was no rallying cry of unity from them, only screams of raving lunacy and division... for 2 years the stated goal was to make him a one term president, you can't do that and help the country recover and you know it..

and I disagree about us going through this before.. It wasn't just wall street diving, it was home prices and jobs as well.. and it wan't just here it was global.. so yes, it was different  this time.. and until it's recovered globally, it's not going to be back to where it was...

I agree we’re not Greece.   They have an economy the size of Boston.  But I don’t understand what is the basis for thinking that it couldn’t happen here?  No one is going to bail us out you know.

because, we're not greece they have an economy the size of Boston..if Boston 'failed' they have a back up that can bail them out... unlike greece..

Greece doesn't have the ability to monetize their debt, we do.. they have to go thru the ECB, we don't.

our interest rate on 10 year bonds is 1.92 % still historically low..as opposed to Greece's 33.66 %

Greece's debt is 160% of the economy, ours is 75%..

we are a HUGE economy, Greece isn't.. we have a huge earning capacity because of that huge economy, greece? not so much, not to mention we have the dollar, the currency of the world that is managed by a single gov't.. Greece? nope..sot so much

That's why 'greece' can't and won't happen here.. unless and until some other super-power, on the level of us, comes along and knocks the shit out of us and takes over.. "Greece' simply will not happen here... you should trust your country more.
