I always liked the defense of the 47 percent. That somehow, because he said it in private, it wasn't what he meant, the context came across awkward and wrong as opposed to what he believed, or that what you say in private should somehow have no bearing on the non-private.
So either he's the guy that tells N jokes when he's in a safe, non-confrontation, non-judgmental environment...or he's the guy willing to tell a N joke to be accepted, even though he'd never tell one in his non-private life. Either way...he's screwed.
It's like the people who tried to defend Dog the Bounty Hunter for his 100 kiloton N bombs. "He was on the phone, in a private conversation...it doesn't count!" Ummmm, yes it does...it's public now. The difference between who you are and what you say in private...and not...is just the reality of exposure.
