My problem with the dealio is that I never held him to some impossible standards, but rather, that I held him to his own standards which were made quite evident every time he spoke. You could feel his passion and commitment for fair play and "just" legislation and his utter shock and amazement when others in the house towed corporate desires and stuck to Luntz like lines (or inspired directly by) and mocked them and shamed them accordingly for their borg like resistance to operate in reality and not the alternate ayn rand universe they'd prefer.
He's a champion for many, perhaps unfairly promoted to that status based on societies need for hero worship. Whether unduly crowned or not, he was the guy we rallied behind and said, "fuck yea!", when he'd point out the insanity that seems to be becoming unfortunately more and more pervasive. His situation isn't ironically hypocritical because he never sat on panels that want to dictate morality nor was any of his energies spent waving around a religious codex that stipulate behavior...
...BUT...he's tainted now. He's got a big ole Scarlet mark pinned to him. He was always human, but he's no longer immune from being the guy who makes wonderful, passionate arguments on the average citizen's part...who just happens to also like to send out cock shots. That dulls the edge.
Immaturity and false equivalency are part of our discourse now...more so than ever. He could give the most eloquent, heart felt, riveting oration ever...and his opponents and those entities who wish to quite him...can now just inject his groin pics as a counter. That shouldn't change or have ANY impact on the truth or humanity that was being spoken...but it does...we let it, and that won't change anytime soon...and he won't be the catalyst who helps change that sophomoric pettiness that insists false equivalency is an actual argumentative point that has as much merit and belongs in the discussion as a valid counter...even though it has NOTHING to do with the discourse taking place.
We do it, they do it. It's alive and well. Obama get's it daily, hourly, by the minute..."His policy sucks, because he uses a teleprompter!" That makes absolutely no fucking sense...yet, it is submitted and allowed by those who disagree with him...as a legitimate contrasting point of contention with WHY it's a flawed policy.
Congressman Wiener is damaged goods now as a voice that cuts across party lines, because frothing foaming mouths were at the ready waiting for the SECOND they could insert false equivalency to oppose his views/stances...where they were devoid of intelligent counter points...NOW they're STILL devoid of actual counter points...but they don't need them.
"Well Tom, you can believe me...or the guy who sends dick shots to young women...I'm just say'in." The dick shots have ZERO to do with ANY debate as substantive material, but that doesn't matter in our current climate.

This, from a HuffPo friend says it better than I: How many of these men confessed their wrongdoing before they were caught, or even admitted their shortcomings immediately when accused (if ever). Senator Weiner seemed very humbled with his apologies to everyone. He didn't just read a prepared statement, but accpeted questions from the press. Most others in this situation, simply read a statement. that is the only thing that 'sorta' redeemed him.... until the 'dick' photo hits anyway.. The problem I have with this (beside it being one of my favorite pols) is like it's been said, he'll be known as the 'crotch-shot' guy.. How can he go toe-to-toe with Megan Kelly or anyone on Fox again? How can he go off with a children's book on the House floor again? Can he do those things again or will this forever 'neuter' him? The worst thing he did was lie all last week the way he did.. and that's the saddest part about all of this because he didn't do anything that wrong.... So he talked dirty with another consenting adult and they exchanged photos. He didn't fuck her, he didn't solicit her, it was a her and not a him, he's not out preaching abstinence and family values.. and the coup de grace? Most of them happened while he was single!!! He had nothing to lie about, but did because he was UBER- embarrassed.. if this wasn't such a highly-partsian era.. he could probably get away with it.. but today? when ppl like Breitbart and James O'Keefe lie to get people fired? when Fox news creates controversy to win elections? When liberals are held to a standard above Jesus because if they falter, they are destroyed by the right's smear/lie/seek and destroy team? How can he come back from this? Man o Man.. I really do hate that this has happened to this guy. .. It's not the same a lying to your wife and constituents about hiking the Appalachian while you're really off with your lover in another country, it's not the same as being the author of many anti-gay policies and getting caught tapping your foot in the men's bathroom for a hook-up, it's not the same as sleeping with your chief of staff's wife and then bribing the both of them to stay quiet about it or facilitating that bribe for your friend... and He didn't leak the name of an undercover CIA op just for partsian payback for an article in the newspaper! ............but since he's a liberal bulldog, he simply can't come back from this..no matter how tame the incidents are..because there is a higher standard for Dems/Libs.. he needs to resign.. lay lo for awhile.. come back like Spitzer with a show on MSNBC and then run for mayor of NYC in a cpl years.. damnitman! I'm gonna miss him..  |

There's really no light between what he did and an outright lie.. but you're right, he didn't do anything that horrible and no more than what Farve did. and if he was any other congressmen, it wouldn't be such a huge falling... but because of who he is, it's really sorta destroyed him.. |
