Chicago school bans homemade lunches, the latest in national food fight

This is kind of back to the question of legislating morality or better nutrition for people. As much as I'm for educating people about the dangers of fast food and that general subject, I'm not sure I like a school system telling parents what they can and can't do regarding their child's food.

It is Chicago, so you have to figure who has the most to gain off of all the students eating lunch. Someone is making some serious cake off of this deal.

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin even showed up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, with dozens of cookies to express her disdain for a debate in the state about recommending teachers limit the number of times per month the sugary treats are eaten in classroom birthday celebrations.

a gift that just keeps giving

For a moment I was wondering what the school bands were doing wrong that the other kids weren't.

Someone makes a point in the article that at least they'll be drinking milk instead of coke. Coke is certainly not healthy but I don't know that it does any harm aside from calories. Milk on the other hand is only necessary through gestation and there is mounting evidence that the hormone filled cows along with their antibiotics are largely responsible for girls hitting puberty at 7 and younger.

I never hear that about boys. I imagine it's the early development of girls that is problematic. I remember Geoff talking about when they were shopping for swim suits he discovered that they have padded suits for girls as young as 7. Given all the problems in our society such as the mixed messages that are sent to kids, being over sexualized by the marketing people of Miley and those before and after her, I think those suits are disgusting.

I know everything evolves and changes with different times but I think kids should have at least a few years of being a kid, riding bikes and playing before being concerned with how the opposite sex looks at them.

I saw this story earlier and was concerned until I read it. The reason for the ban is because kids would bring 'hot fries and soda' for their lunches..

so what is another way to fix this since parent obviously won't fix it themselves?

According to some, that could be grounds to take the kids. Wink

Anything that I pack for lunch is bound to be better than school lunch--have you EATEN a school lunch lately? Atrocious. Frozen popsicles count as a "fruit", they load the meal up with carbs and processed meat, and every single kid drinks chocolate milk.

Most people would agree with the hot fries argument which is representative of what was once tantamount to a pandemic of vending machines, ala cart choices such as pizza and a financial windfall for the schools that utilized that system. It seems the larger issue is that it's one more thing that the state is dictating. Many people are concerned that individuals are being conditioned to trust the authorities blindly or let themselves be controlled by what are not in many cases any threat at all but an agenda of fear and surrender.

That's part of the context here and not conspiracy theory and I might add, I'm undecided at this point but here are a few examples of why there are major concerns:

Drill Tests Students, Faculty and Staff’s Response To 'Shooter' On Campus

owa Safety Drill Portraying Shooter as 'Anti-Immigration' Pro-Gun Student Canceled

Lockdown drill prepares students for emergencies

Central School drill prepares community for potentially catastrophic event

I go the middle kid's school around once a month or so to eat lunch with her--she loves it. The lunches are rancid. I was there on pizza day last time and I was horrified.

That woman ate a year worth of school lunches.

Check that out--those are perfectly average school lunches. The federal government is still cramming down the outdated, corn heavy food pyramid, so most school lunches contain far too many carbs and not nearly enough veg.

I got my first ever unintended boner standing in line in the 6th grade for enchiladas at Lowell Jr. High School in San Antonio. Don't know if it was because of the enchiladas (I've never had one as good since) or the cute hispanic boy in front of me.  Wink
